Tuba Christmas Ornament

My favorite Christmas ornament is an unlikely one, as it was a gift from my mom to an old flame of mine.
He was a musician when we were in college, so she bought a small glass tuba ornament to place on our tree to include him as part of our family. I don't know if he even remembers the ornament, or our Christmases together, but his memory still pulls at my heartstrings around the holidays.
I dated him before I met my husband, but he changed my life and I will never look at life the same way again, or take my family for granted.
He had no family. His mother abandoned he and his brother with their stepfather when they were young. Soon after she left, his stepfather passed away. From that point on, they bounced from caretaker to caretaker, and were even homeless as children at some point.
Around the holidays, it's so easy to get caught up in the mayhem and frustrations of the commercial side of Christmas, but each time I see or think of that ornament, I remember how blessed I am to have wonderful parents, and now a loving husband and three beautiful children.
Though this young man is no longer in my life, I often find myself praying for him, hoping that someday he will have a family to help decorate a Christmas tree.
And who knows maybe when that day comes he just might find a long-forgotten Christmas ornament from Santa.
