Dinner with the Spirits of Christmas Past

Christmas Tree
Each December my mom, my son, and I decide which favorite foods to have for our traditional Christmas dinner for the three of us.
There are some recipes we fix every year for Christmas dinner - like Grandma's green bean casserole and Great-Grandma's strawberry jello with whipped cream.
On Christmas Day, we put the ham or cornish game hens in the oven to start roasting at around noon.
While dinner's cooking, it's time to set the table. We open the china cabinet and choose a variety of old dishes and serving pieces inherited from loved ones. Grandpa's china water pitcher, Ann's red goblets, Great-Grandma's serving platter, and so on.
Most people would think the dishes on our Christmas table are all mismatched, but we know how they're related. :)
While my mom finishes cooking the gravy, my son puts one of our iPods in the iPod speakers and starts up a playlist of Christmas music, and I light at least half a dozen candles to make the table glow.
Then we fill our plates too full of food, sit down to dinner, and each of us proposes a toast.
In the glow of candlelight the three of us enjoy each other's company and our small homespun feast. After the hustle-bustle of most of the month of December, it's a quiet, cozy time that we all look forward to.
And the loved ones whose recipes and dishes are part of our tradition seem to join us as welcome spirits of Christmas past.
Thank you for this lovely place to share holiday memories and traditions!
