Decorating Christmas Cookies

Don't you love decorating Christmas Cookies?

Eating them is even better... Yum!

The Christmas Cookies from Hell

By Tiffany

My mom started this Christmas cookie making tradition back when my sister and I were very young. I remember being so excited at the prospect of making Christmas cookies, and little did I know that the process would go on, and on, and on!

I can remember that very first batch of cookies my mom and her friend Sue made, and I recall her saying, "These are the Christmas cookies from hell!" I looked at my sister and said, “Did mom just say that bad word?” What could be so horrible about Christmas cookies after all?

As the years went by, and we got a little older, we were better able to frost these five hundred cookies that come from my mom's exclusive recipe. We even looked forward to it a little. Christmas cookie decorating meant turning on some great Christmas music, gathering around the kitchen table with the candles lit, and of course, sneaking some cookies. It was always a very joyful time. I should add that this process takes hours and hours. It is no small project, and takes 4 people frosting cookies for 3 or more hours to finish - hence the name - Christmas cookies from hell.

Children turn to teenagers (unfortunately) and suddenly my sister and I were far too busy and too cool to participate in cookie making. That didn't stop my mom from forcing us to engage in her Christmas cookie tradition. To keep us interested she also forced our boyfriends' de jour to frost and decorate Christmas cookies too. You could hear a lot of whining and complaining about the amount of cookies from all of us, but it didn't stop my mom from bringing a new stack to the table each time we were getting low. Many a boyfriend was tortured by the Bruning cookie decorating tradition!

It's a tradition I can't wait to start now with my little one (and one on the way). Bring on the Christmas Cookies from hell; it just wouldn’t be the same without them.
