CHRISTMAS
by Judy Jordan
Christmas has always been my favorite holiday. I remember when we were kids how excited we were to leave cookies, sugar cubes and milk for Santa and his reindeer. And to see in the morning the milk gone and crumbs where the cookies had been!
Daddy would put up the cardboard fireplace and we would hang our stockings. We would be so excited to find oranges, candy canes, nuts etc. in it the next morning. Know we got toys and books etc. but not a lot as we knew Santa could not bring us everything we wanted!
One year daddy made up a toy white stove with knobs, a sink. Then we each got a wooden bunk bed for our dolls. It had a ladder going up the side. I still have mine and have a doll in it. My Aunt Betty (my dad’s sister) sent me one year a homemade patchwork quilt she made for my doll, a pillow and pillowcase and still have those. How excited I was.
Sometimes an older shy Aunt Lilah (she lived in a home) would come for a few hours. She gave us pretty handkerchiefs and we were taught early on to appreciate what we got. And I still feel that way today. Usually my Uncle Myron and Aunt Kate would come down for presents and a meal so it was nice to be with family.
I still got the panda bear I got when I was a year old ( as mentioned in my baby book). It is lovingly used-even has it’s eyes etc~! We got a lot of books as I have always loved to read. Remember the ones with the fuzzy covers and then they had the ones that had tabs inside where when you moved them the figures would move? Mom saved a lot of my books and gave them to me one Christmas and still has them.
Wish we would have taken pictures but was not done back then. But I can use my memory to reflect on the days when we were all today on that special holiday.
