Christmas & Our Bible Analysis Game
by Kim
(West Virginia)
Hello, my name is Kim and the location of this game originated in West Virginia. It has been going on since before I was born (the family estimates it goes back about 30 years or so). It is called "Bible analysis." enjoy!!
My family is very close, and we live in different locations all across the United States (the furthest is Delaware), so each year at Christmas we try to cherish our time together as much as we possibly can because for some of us, this is the only time of the year that we will get to see our family.
My Uncle is a minister, and while we all love the idea of Christmas (gift exchanges, baking goodies, watching movies and listening to christmas music, etc.), we still try and remember the whole reason for celebratin
So, after we've all eaten Christmas dinner (usually the festivities take place at my grandmother's house because she has the largest table and dining area), we all gather around the Christmas tree to get the fun started by playing what we have named: "Bible analysis."
However, before we even start the game itself, we all go around and exchange gifts with the person whose name we had drawn for the gift exchange.
As we open each gift, we each say something nice about the other person whose name we got. For example, if I drew my brother's name, I might say something like "One of the qualities I like best about my brother is his sense of humor and quirky personality." This continues until everyone has opened the gifts from each other and said something nice about someone else.
Then, it's time for the actual game of
"Bible analysis." It's pretty simple in terms of how it is played. You need notebook paper or a tablet of paper, pencil(s), a timer, and the bible!!
We break into two teams by drawing numbers (evens paired with evens, odds paired with odds). The next step is that each team picks a verse or short story from the bible, in which the other team will have to guess what it is. (Now, the team whose turn it is to pick for the other team can choose a difficult verse to make it hard for the other team to guess, but they must keep in mind that the opposing team could also do the same to them when it's their turn to guess, so most of the time, we all try to stick with a fairly easy to moderate verse).
So, when it is your team's turn, one person from YOUR team is shown the verse that the opposing team picked. Then, that same person from your team must keep giving your team clues until you guess what the verse is or time is up. So, it's similar to taboo but not exactly the same!
Each team is given three minutes to guess their team's verse. The rules are: You cannot say any part of the verse itself. You can draw pictures but NOT words. You can act out any part of the verse that you would like, or make facial expressions and gestures and if your team is having a hard time with the verse and still have not guessed what it is, then when your time is down to one minute, you may tell your team members the book from which the verse originated (for example, Corinthians).
I must say that this is a game we all look forward to every year because by the end we are all laughing and having fun, while remembering what Christmas is all about! Anyone who has a large family should try this because it's so much more fun when you have lots of people!!
